I get these from time to time in my mailbox. “Question. During a rally, player A runs into player B. Player A is the offensive player trying to get to the ball. He is able to absorb the contact and still get to the ball and hit it. Player B stops because of the contact. Player A says he was still able to get to the ball and hit a good shot. Does player B get a replay? Or do they play through the contact if the player is still able to hit a shot?”
This was a practice match, not a tournament match. Etiquette would require a replay based on player b stopping. Etiquette would also require player B to call a rally hinder on themselves in the spirit of sportsmanship.
Of course neither of those things happened in the practice match but an argument did! My question? Are you playing to win? Or are you playing to improve?
In tournament play a rally hinder should be called on player B, even if play stopped or even if player B stopped. But you want to win an argument in the heat of battle in practice.
Look at it this way. You need good players to play to get better. Go with it-for the good of your game or have a hissy-fit, never speak to that person again, and write an email to the coach! When you read that I’m thinking the latter avenue does not seem better.
