RACQUETBALL TIPS by Jim Winterton
In recent years I have gotten this question. “Coach, What is a “cut” or “slice” serve?”
This is a term used to describe a serve that makes the ball
travel away from your opponent on your forehand side. This can open up the
entire court and make the serve to your backhand side deadly if hit with the same
motion. Imagine the ball is the face of a clock and you are right-handed and you
wish to hit a normal drive serve. You would hit the ball at 3. If left-handed, you
would hit at 9. If you want to hit a cut serve, hit at 5 or 7 respectively. Another
option is to get to the ball with the wrist before the racquet. This produces an
“inside-out” effect because it is hit deeper in your stance.
Either way, when hit correctly the serve produces a “knuckle ball effect”. The beauty of this
serve is it travels away from the receiver and can create weaker returns on the
other side of the court as well.
