Train like the Navy Seals train. One part of Seal training is sleep deprivation. Then the candidates are told they are getting sleep after days without sleep only to be awakened in an hour. Why? War is not fair and the trainee had better get used to it. Now I do not suggest you do not sleep for 24 hours and play a tournament but racquetball is not fair either so include in your training, dealing with unfair calls, slow ball, fast ball, cheating opponents and any obstacle you can think of.
Prepare for the unexpected, just like the Seals!
Currently I have several athletes faced with back to back tournaments, international travel and lack of sleep. Dwelling on any of these things will not help them at all. Overcoming these obstacles are the key. After four 6am to 11pm tournament days I had a guest athlete to coach on Monday through Wednesday, after our Arizona Open. I got it done by not dwelling on lack of sleep, being tired, and by huge amounts of coffee! Back to you and your training!
Prepare for match surprises!
Get behind by 8 points and go for the comeback. Schedule matches back to back. Find that cheating opponent and let them cheat away and see if you can win in spite their double bounce gets! Had a great workout? Hop on the court and play a tough opponent (note: be careful with this one as injury can happen but once in awhile I used to do this just to get used to the tournament running late and playing in doubles and singles thing)
You can win even if you are tired!
Seals train to overcome mental barriers as well as physical ones. Train the brain!
Go get’em Tigers!
