Shot Selection 505 Graduate Level

Here are five errors that are easy to make in reading video of professional players.

1. Shot selection-it is not what you think it is. Shots are not always dictated by what shot is open. Since these athletes possess great speed, the open court is not always open.

2. Shot selection again-be aware of conditions. For example I will never forget all the cross court shots at one international tournament. We were in Colorado Springs and the altitude kept the ball in front of competitors.

3. Strategy-the players might be using one serve more than others due to injury rather than strategy!

4. Serves-criticism of short serves may not be valid. Remember, the athletes at this level do not care about short serves, only accurate serves. All have good second serves.

5. Getting to the ball late or early may not be a valid criticism either. The reason is the speed of the ball does not translate to video. It is hard to judge how fast the ball is traveling.

I remember another tournament where my athlete (a house-hold legendary name) did not hit down the lines. I got all sorts of advice from experts who did not know my player could not hit a down the line at that point in their career to save their life. The name of the game at this point in the match was to survive, not tell the player to hit down the lines. It had already been discussed before the match by the athlete and myself. This was fixed by said athlete after the tournament, not during it!
