Every once in awhile I come home totally wiped out. I am tired and I have to look back at my day to figure it out. Yesterday was such a day. I had a lesson with a player who had never had a lesson and was self-taught. I was amazed at the athleticism and intelligence of the player and how they had morphed from martial arts expertise to racquetball. To say the footwork was different would be a vast understatement. Now here was my dilemma-what do I do? Blow up everything and start over or do I adjust what I coach and teach to what the athlete does well. Easy answer for me, I adjust my coaching to fit the athlete!
Three hours flew by and I was challenged at every facet I taught but likewise i got the gears moving with this athlete also. The excitement of learning new ways of approaching serve, return, and footwork is contagious!
Just when I get done my weekly lesson with my 7th grade junior got going and we had a blast. Just when i was ready to go home a few little kids showed up and wanted to play. I took 15 minutes with them because they love the game so much and are cool kids.
So when I look back I have had over 4 hours on the court hitting and teaching followed by a session with my personal trainer. That might explain it!
I guess the other part of this equation is I love what I do! I forget it is work! That is not a bad thing either!
