Gasp!! No post today? My social media planning backfired on me as I was moving posts around. If I have one post about technique I like to follow that one with maybe a different topic. So I move posts around and in my rearranging I forgot today’s post. On the fly here it goes!
Ramblings from running a tournament to coaching in same tournament.
1. Shot selection is so huge. Many matches came down to one part of the court not exploited.
Case in point-get to match point by shooting down the lines and then change to pinching or vice versa. Both matches I saw resulted in losses at crucial times. To be fair, it happens to all of us and if the “wrong shot” according to textbook, had rolled out and been perfect nobody would have noticed!
2. Attitude-You can smell the fear and so can an opponent.
3. Referees-many matches were played with no refs, including cash divisions like the open. I have mixed feelings about that actually. On one hand it is nice to have two “fair” athletes, but on the other hand it is a better look with a good referee.
4. Speaking of referees-in a never-ending quest to make things “fair” there are six rule changes being proposed. I hate rules committees and I was once on the rules committee. All a rules committee does is change the rules you just got used to enforcing.
5. Running a tournament is hard work. Running a real good event is even harder and cannot be done without some awesome financial support, and hard working volunteers and a great state board. We are blessed in Arizona.
6. Tip of the day was a little late, but I hope you all have a great upcoming weekend and fill the courts with rollouts!
Go get’em tigers!
