Footwork is a biggie of course with racquetball. Now here is a tip–watch the feet. The more advanced the player, the more the feet move. The less advanced in technique the less the feet move. A good player will go to a ball, set their feet, and continue to “micro-adjust” their feet. This becomes an unconscious movement over time if practiced. The Novice moves to the ball and Plants their feet like little trees and then lean to the ball instead of adjusting their feet.
One popular way of training is the use of the agility ladder. By doing movements in the ladder you can increase your foot movement and the theory goes it will help your footwork in the court.
I must admit I have struggled with this popular theory and do not totally agree with it. I believe to get better at racquetball you must rehearse perfect racquetball footwork.
Like all things, there are exceptions. I do like the agility ladder in some cases, especially with athletes who have footwork issues. The proper use of the ladder and the footwork it employs will accelerate the learning curve with players at the beginning, intermediate, and even some in the advanced skill levels.
You can find agility ladder drills by googling it on youtube but beware: Some of these drills are dangerous and if you have foot, knee, hip issues you must be very careful! Use caution when training with the ladder and get a physician’s clearance if you have any health issues.
One more thing about the agility ladder. The drills should be done in a progression. Basic warmup (straight through run), skill (ickeys etc.), and finally, power–the jump exercises or higher impact. Again, please get a physician’s clearance before attempting ladder work. In my camps I hold a lot of people out of these exercises because of injury risks.
