Oh the shock and horror!
Some years ago yours truly was in a tournament in Columbus, Ohio. I remember the year because the Giants won the playoffs and were headed to their first Superbowl vs Denver. A friend shot some video of yours truly playing. It sat in a VHS cassette for years and last month I sent it to a company for transfer to a jump drive. Now I teach this stuff and am pretty good at it, so imagine my shock when I saw what I was doing on the court. I thought the racquet was here, but the racquet was there. I thought my footwork was this but it was that!
How many of us are in the same boat? In this day and age a smart phone video segment of five minutes can change your game for the better.
My short video showed poor racquet depth, poor movement to the ball, and the result of all of those things was poor shot selection due to all of the above. I also discovered poor game planning a shot selection. When I was a young player I used to shoot video of myself playing students. I stopped it because instead of looking at the student’s issues, I was looking at mine! There are disadvantages to having a coach’s eye for the game.
Lesson to be learned here? I try to empathize with my athletes. It’s easier to do that when I show them my video!
