Are you praising luck or building true skill?
In sports, outcomes can be deceiving. An athlete can execute a movement flawlessly and get a bad result due to bad luck. Another athlete can execute poorly and get rewarded by pure chance.
If we only cheer when the result looks good on the stat sheet, we teach our kids to chase luck instead of mastery.
To build an athlete with an unbreakable foundation, shift your feedback to intent, mechanics, and execution quality:
⚾️ Baseball: On a hard out: “Way to barrel the ball—you hit it hard! Hard luck.” On a blooper hit: “You just missed it, but got lucky today.”
🏀 Basketball: On a rim-out: “Great form and confidence—keep taking that exact shot.” On a wild shot that goes in: “Lucky bounce, but get your feet set next time.”
⚽️ Soccer: On a shot off the post: “Awesome technique and power—unlucky bounce!”
When athletes know their execution is recognized regardless of bad luck, their fear of making mistakes disappears.
💬 How do you help your athlete stay confident when they execute well but get a bad result?
