So I am coaching up a storm with a new athlete. This athlete has a great fundamental start to their game having taken lessons before from a very knowledgable coach. So what is there left to do?
1. Increase efficiency of forehand and backhand mechanics
2. Coach up movement patterns on the court for said athlete
3. Give the athlete the drills to reinforce those movement patterns
4. Go over the off-court training, specifically transverse muscle memory
5. Go over the use of practice time
The one thing I emphasize over and over to my athletes I train. None of the above works if you do not force yourself out of your comfort zone. Your commitment to the training determines your success. Let’s boil it down to a phrase. Train to improve your game.
Playing practice matches to win? Or playing practice matches to improve? The former keeps you at your level. The latter forces you to improve.
If you improve opponents must rise to your level. If not, you have to play over your head to meet their level.
Go get’em tigers!!!
