Little Details Can Make a Big Difference

Little things make a big difference in your game. Here is one. Everybody knows (well almost) that to hit a good shot on both sides of the court you should change your grip. This gives you a longer injury-free career. What everybody may not know is the angle of the wrist with the arm is just as important. A few years ago one of my Pro athletes came to me and told my junior player had the wrong grip on his backhand. I knew that was not the case as I had taught him from day one. So I watched junior play and guess what was going on? He had been playing lacrosse all summer and therefore was holding his racquet like a lacrosse stick with the wrist cocked so he could shoot and pass better. This extreme wrist thing made it look as if he had the wrong grip. Got the wrist back to normal position, and he began hitting good backhands again. This is an example of how one little thing can cause a chain reaction in your game!

Oh, and one more thing about grip. As I have said before, it is easy to be a gripologist! Everyone has to play with the same grip may not be realistic due to the structural reasons mentioned above. There are advantages and disadvantages to every grip. As long as the racquet is flat through the hitting zone, accuracy will follow!
