“It’s always Marcia Marcia Marcia! You’re all against me and you worse of all!!
For those of you too young to remember, this was the classic Jan Brady line from the old tv show, The Brady Bunch.
The psychology of one on one racquetball is a never-ending process. Because we see our opponent through the lens of our camera we should step back and realize a few things.
1. Your opponent is not trying to cheat you, they thought they got it……or they knew it was a double bounce and knew the ref could not see it.
2. The Ref is calling the match very fair…….or the ref went out for lunch earlier with your opponent and they play doubles.
3. The draw was done fairly by points or…………..the tournament director was dumped by your sister last month so he is plotting to get you the toughest draw possible.
4. The ref thought it was just a hinder, not an avoidable because the ref has good judgement or…….the ref is a c player at best and has poor judgement.
These are the thoughts of a healthy competitor vs a paranoid one. As I once told a good friend of mine, “Sometimes I think they are out to get me!” The response?
“Jim, they are all out to get you!”
It is what you want to make it.
