Above: 4 generations: L to R-My Grandfather, Raymond Winterton, Myself circa age 28, and My Dad, Stewart G Winterton
Today would have been my Dad’s 103rd birthday. I really need to say that my Father was an incredible guy. He ran down the draft center to enlist the day after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Less than a year later he was fighting for his life on Guadalcanal. From Guadalcanal to R and R in Australia to Hawaii and back to combat in Saipan and Tinian.
On Guadalcanal he served with the famous Chesty Puller in the original first Marines. Because of my Dad I am always early, not late for appointments, I know how to work hard, and I understand there is a huge difference between talk and work. I am also blessed to have three brothers and a sister who are all successful in their fields of work. They too, like our Dad, are larger than life to their families. We never thought of ourselves as poor, but by today’s standards we sure were but we enjoyed something unfortunately many kids today do not have. A stable home, with food on the table, and meals with both our parents.
Sorry for the personal digression so let me get to the racquetball tip that I got from an early age.
“Jim, Shut up and get to work!”
That is how Dad would put it.
I got the work part right but never did shut up. Guess that explains the Racquetball tip of the day! Thanks for reading this long tribute to a great man, and part of a great generation
