Legislating Racquetball in the board rooms or in the clubs–some rules to consider!
1. Do what is right! That means not what you want, but what is good for the players and the organization. Players’ welfare should come first in all decision making.
2. Do stand up against popular group-think if you are right. Do not be afraid to be controversial. Make a stand! I get the feeling one articulate person can run the entire local, state, or national board!
3. Make decisions based on what is important. Here is an example. When I taught school many of the teachers had a list of 20-50 rules in their classroom. I had two. Be Nice and treat people like you would like to be treated. When the rule book becomes mega-huge, fun stops.
4. Do not be vindictive. This is one I have seen many times. Someone got you. Now you will spend the rest of your life trying to get them back. Is that good for the sport? Come on, let it go!
5. Let the president, boss of your company, head coach, executive director, whoever, make decisions of whom they want to work with. When you try to put your own people in someone else’s workplace in disaster can happen. This happened to me once when someone made me hire someone who backstabbed me big time. Shame on me for not fighting the powers to be. Of course the same people who made me do the hire that I did not want in the first place made me do the fire! I had to do their dirty work and clean up the mess that was not of my making!
