Aim high my friends!! Every year I run into new athletes to work with and I am often amazed when I ask them their goals. I am amazed because most of them tend to aim too low. The goal does not match their talent. The talent is there but the dream is not.
My former college football coach, Gerry D’Agostino, was a giant of a man. Not in stature but in character. He only coached for 9 years at Brockport State in Western New York, but he turned out an amazing array of coaches for the next 40 years well after his life was over. NFL, College, and high school football were impacted all across the nation due to this man.
I was lucky enough to spend time with him after I got out of college. He held court for me every year. After my football season when I was a young coach I would go visit. The lessons I learned from his wealth of knowledge serve me to this day. I remember him standing up in the office and saying “If you aim here (he held his hand chest high) you get here at the worst (he put his hand a foot lower) but if you aim here–(he stretched his hand as high as he could above his head) you get here at the worst-(he put his hand above his head about a foot lower) So you get the metaphor pretty easily. Aim high and go for it. What I see are people not “all in”. People holding a little back here or there. Skimping on the mental training, or physical training will limit the advancement toward the goals.
As the old Army ad used to say, “Be all that you can Be!”
Or settle for ‘good enough”!
It’s up to you! Get out there and make your legacy!
