Another day, another email to Winterton Central-
Dear Coach W,
One of my weaknesses is the ceiling defensive shot. Im struggling!
Signed Struggling in Syracuse
Dear Struggling–The ceiling ball on the backhand side especially is the shot that takes you up a level in play because once you master it, you can keep your opponent deep in the court and be more consistent in your play. Without getting too technical here you should be striking the ball chest to chin high within your stance on the backhand side and not in front of your stance!
Hope this helps-there is much more to this than that bit of advice-but that is a start! One more thing-make sure your hitting elbow is behind your shoulder nearest the front wll-if not you are “arming” the shot and headed for overuse injury of shoulder or elbow!
PS: It does take practice. Yours truly used to go to the club at 4am to hit these before he went to work and I did this three days a week until I could master the ceiling ball.
