Well, I did it again. I don’t mean to but it happens. Here is the scenario. Player comes to me and begins to work with me. This player has played for other coaches but decides to jump in the deep water and come work with me. Player has moved up in rankings and feeling all good about themselves.
Enter Coach W. Coach Dub points out flaws in footwork, shot selection, positioning, mechanics, and several mental errors in the process of the first workout. That was bad enough but in the second workout when some of these mistakes have not been worked on or fixed, Coach Dub has a heart to heart with said athlete. That little session goes something like this:
“You are wasting your money and time. You have not fixed X, Y, or Z. Worse than that, you have not tried to. You are just playing, not improving. If you want to work with me, you have to work on your game, not just play. Just playing got you into trouble and that is why you are here. When you come to me seeking help, you are in trouble. When you come to me with questions about your practice, you are on the right track. When you come to me with questions about your practice and offer a few solutions and ask for my opinion, you are really on your way.”
Said athlete begins to cry, or gets very frustrated and confused. I did not mean to do that, but it happens.
Now to all readers who tune in regularly. In a game if you are in trouble and your solution is to kill the ball, you are only focused on outcome. If you can adjust arm angle, movement, or other such cues, you are focused on process. Process makes you a winner. Focusing on outcome ….may not!
Now get in there and go get’em tiger!
