Distractions distractions distractions-How do you deal with them 101?
Here is a tip I first heard from a handball champion in the 60s. “Never take your eye off the ball, even during timeouts and between games.” I tried that and it worked!
Let me explain why (at least for me)
When I looked outside the court-or above in the gallery-and I saw someone-anyone I knew-it triggered a stream of thoughts that distracted me from performing. Next round opponents, enemies, haters, lovers, and all other sorts of people can take focus away.
Time outs were the worst. Between games was no picnic either. If I won game one, people were congratulating me. I only won a game and I found that distracting. If I lost and I was getting strategy sessions from fans, that did not help either. Watching the ball did!
One tournament I remember seeing my wife watching which reminded me I had not picked up milk for dinner. I kid you not. I had won the first game and was cruising the second and then……..disaster! But later I did get the milk!!
So back to the ball stare-down I went!! Remember to play the ball, not the opponent for more laser-like concentration
