Elite coaching skills can be taught to a certain degree. For several years I have worked to help young coaches get started in this game.
We do need national standards and a few years ago we set out to do that in USA
Coaches should value or develop a coaching philosophy.
Coaches should have a basic knowledge of:
Biomechanics
Business, finance
Doping,supplements, WADA, USADA information
Ethics
Periodization of training
Athletes developmental growth
Leadership
Safety
Conditioning
Skills, tactics
Designing programs and scheduling
Monitoring training
Ideally (but not mandatory) a basic college Physical Education in courses like sports psychology, nutrition, physiology, sports medicine, and biomechanics.
Scouting and game preparation
Team building
Athlete’s personal growth
I suggest anyone interested in coaching learn their craft by mentoring with other coaches. I currently mentor several coaches around the world. What is weird is if I wanted to be an auto mechanic I would need training. That auto mechanic just becomes a coach if they can play racquetball. That is like me being an auto mechanic if I can drive a car. Coaches! Find someone and learn your craft!
