This one came via the fb network to my desk-
“Coach-my opponents in doubles say I take up too much room. When I move to the ball I stay away from it and move toward it only before my shot. They say this inconveniences them and they get out of position. What do you think about their complaints?”
Signed-hindered in the hinterlands-
Dear hindered–
Thanks for writing in–but too bad for your opponents–it is your right to the ball as it is your turn to hit it–they cannot impede your progress. I played a guy who alternated hitting backhands and forehands from the left–really hard for me as I backed away to give him a backhand-he would turn around and rip me with a forehand and beg for an avoidable hinder–and get it! As for follow through–you really do not need to over-rotate on your follow through-that said they also have to get out of your way-I do think follow throughs should not be too “dramatic “and not just for safety reasons, but also it is an inefficient way of moving to the next shot.
One more thing on this-the casual game of doubles often turns into war because players do not move out of the way. With no ref, and nobody calling rally hinders on themselves it is frustrating. At the higher levels of play, players call it on themselves.but at Lower levels of play, not so much!
