Many moons ago a well meaning person posted something about changing the scoring so one person could not dominate winning pro stops. I do have to be fair because this person did admit it probably would not change the number one standing. But this is humorous to me for a couple of reasons.
First they did change the ball and after a brief period of adjustment he is still winning!
Secondly, I happen to have worked with this guy going way back to when he was not as dominant. True, he won, but he also lost some. He hired me, embraced what I taught and took it to another level I never knew existed. Yes, he is the greatest player of all time and I am also reminded of a similar conversation in public regarding a dominant Marty Hogan. The talking heads back then wanted to slow the ball down to stop Hogan from dominating. In my opinion, having watched many of his matches. slowing the ball down would not have stopped Hogan and in fact later in his career I happened to be Coaching a player in the finals and Hogan beat him with lob serves.
It is not the serve, the scoring, or the seeding that makes a player dominant. Mostly it is preparation. Instead of changing scoring I wish I could coach some of the phenoms who are coming up. I know it is not possible due to conflict of interest but the players need to up their game to be number one.
The great tennis player Chris Evert wrote an article in tennis magazine years ago about training and I loved the title. Ready?
Losing? Work harder! Still losing?? Work harder!! Still losing??? WORK HARDER!!!
Speaking of Marty Hogan, he wrote about what it takes to be number one some time ago. In that post was the same theme-work makes you dominant. Of course, great genetics helps, but Tom Brady was not the best athlete when he competed at quarterback, but he is considered the best quarterback of all time by many! That reason was because of the work he put into it.
