There is a reason for every kill shot and every miss. Know those reasons and your game takes off.
My first question when I began playing was “Why did the ball go there when I was aiming over there?” Nobody I knew could really answer that question so I had to find out for myself. The only way to do that was to get on the court and practice. While doing that I discovered a few things and during the Dave Peck Camps in the early 80s Dave reinforced it.
Now remember all of you literal people out there, front means toward the front wall and back means toward the back wall!
Repeat after me.
If you tilt your shoulders up, the ball comes up.
If you tilt your shoulders down, the ball goes down.
If you hit the ball behind you, the ball hits the side wall.
If you hit the ball in front of you, the ball goes cross court.
If you hit the ball in the power zone,
the ball goes straight in and straight back all alone!
This little mantra goes a long way to helping an athlete focus on the process of playing vs focusing on the outcome!
