Passing syndrome leads to a style of play called, “rallying”! The advantage of this style of play is the opponent will defeat themselves 80% of the time. Making the adversary beat themselves is the strong point to this type of approach to the game. Indeed, this style is taught at many camps and it is conservative as well as successful.
However, to hit the next level you need to add the “put away” shot. This leads us to the discussion of shot selection. Put some painter’s tape on the front wall about two feet high. Play the game aiming there or below on offensive shots. This allows you the best of both worlds. You can be a safe rally racquetball ripper and also avoid the floor defeating you during rallies.
I have had the pleasure of coaching the greatest men and women players in the game. From on court lessons, to pro coaching, I’ve worked with very recognizable champions. What separates the best from the rest? Being unafraid to shoot the ball. and execution of kill shots and passes is the difference.
There are some famous rally players and they are consistent; until they meet a shooter on a cement court. Then it is a dogfight! Why? Cannot control the ball as well because the the court will be fast and passes come off the back wall. Couple this with a drive server’s advantage and you have upset city in the making.
My advice to up and comers? Play both styles to move your game up by springing for the painter’s tape!!
