Yesterday I heard of the passing of legend Charlie Brumfield. He was a larger than life champion, and had come to a place in his life where his humility and charm was contagious. He was an early champion and the number one player in the world. I met him at a pro stop in the 70’s and was blown away with the intensity of Charlie and the players he competed against. About 12 or 13 years ago I flew to San Diego and interviewed him with the help of Pablo Farve, the current USA head coach, and IRT official. You can check out the videos below.
Anyone taking the time to watch the interviews will be impressed with his expert analysis of today’s game as well as the history of our game. Around 1980 Charlie published in National Racquetball his theories of the game. I kept those articles and won a ton of clock radios playing 35 plus senior divisions in the Northeast! Charlie actually autographed the articles for me.
The GOAT and I reminisced about Charlie recently. We will miss the people’s Champion. RIP Charlie. With the passing of Dr Bud, and now Charlie, somewhere in the next world are two guys hitting cross-court ceiling balls!!
RIP Charlie.
