In honor of National Doubles 2025-2026!. At the time of this posting doubles is still the most popular game in many of the the clubs!
Rules of good doubles!
1. Cover for your partner–I go over pro videos and see one partner standing like a statue while the other one scrambles all over the court.
2. Make your shots based on team positioning, not the player on your side. From playing a ton of singles I see this error quite frequently.
3. Attack the weakness of the other team. Isolate the weak player. If the stronger player is covering their shots at times do not stray from the game plan. The stronger player still has a ton of court to cover.
4. Get’em out of there!! Do not try to have one of you “wade and trade shots” with two people in the front court. Hit Zs and ceiling balls to get the other team back.
5. Play singles when your partner is out of position. Singles positioning because it is really one against two at that point.
6. Exploit the middle! Duh, why does an opponent play left and right? Usually because they are good on the left and right! Therefore attack the middle!
Many more little tidbits that good doubles players know but for now I will stick with six! Good luck to all teams, even the ones I coach against, at National Doubles!
