One of my many jobs is to work for the USA Racquetball Instructor’s Certification Program. Some time ago I graded a video of an instructor. He did an outstanding job coaching up the Z serve. One thing he forgot though; relocation. After he hit the corner of the front wall six to eight feet high the instructor did not move back.
Relocation is crucial because if you do not move correctly you are going to:
A-get whacked in the back
B-get penalized for a rally hinder.
So the correct movement is to serve and move laterally one or two steps away from the nearest side wall and back up looking over your shoulder. Do not turn around and face the ball unless you want to be kissing a round piece of vulcanized rubber! Think of an “L” type movement-move laterally a few steps and then back. Glance over your shoulders as you move laterally and back into center court position. This puts you out of the line of fire from an eager opponent.
Solo practitioners consider this. When you practice any serve get in the habit of putting the relocation to center court into the serve practice! If you do not you are practicing half of the serve, not a full serve!
