CBOS which I call Ceiling ball overuse syndrome-wow-after watching four days of College racquetball I have to say I have never seen so many ceiling balls in my entire life. The college coaches have made an art form of coaching up ceiling balls. The “don’t make a mistake” game plan will works until you get into the top levels of tournament play. Best plan is to understand the purpose of the ceiling ball. Simply put, if you do not have an offensive shot you should go to the ceiling. If you do have an offensive shot, you should take it. That is why I coach forehand and backhand so much. I want to broaden the offensive area with good mechanics and footwork. So I see my athletes in the front court and their opponent way behind them and my athletes hit a ceiling ball! It drives me nuts! The entire front court is theirs for the taking and they let the opponent off the hook! It’s enough to make me double my blood pressure meds! Do not play afraid is a phrase I said over and over. The worst shot is the one you do not take! Use the ceiling yes-but do not abuse that shot with CBOS–Ceiling ball over-use syndrome.
