ROM is a term I came up with in the 70s when I began coaching my favorite player at that time, Me!
It is an acronym for Rhythm of Movement. Many people teach what to do but not “how” to do it. Without a rhythm you really cannot be effective on both sides of the court. Usually this ROM comes better to players on one side than the other. The laws of physics dictate for every action there must be reaction. To hit a ball more effectively from both sides of the court one must turn away before turning into the ball. To have control an athlete must let go! Tight one way motion destroys shoulders, elbows and lower backs.
How do you know if you have ROM? You will hear comments like, “You seem like you have all day to hit the ball, and how do you hit the ball so low or you look so smooth out there. Your footwork is cool!”
How do you know if you do not have ROM?
If you hit effortlessly you got it –with lots of effort not so much!
