So I am going over a video of one of my stellar athletes and I notice the game has fallen off. Ironically, a few hours later I am doing a lesson and my athlete says this to me: “I notice that each week you add something and each week I continue to grow as a player. I now understand the value of monthly coaching!” A few hours after that I get a message from another athlete-“Even though you have not been on the court with me, the video feedback has been great! My game has improved!”
These messages have a common thread. The player who is not improving has stopped practicing and is just playing. The other two are practicing. Once I pointed that out, the first athlete mentioned got back to work. The second athlete was correct. What we are doing now we could not have approached a year ago. The last athlete has bombarded me with video and the feedback has been relentless on my part. “No, No No!!” Was the feedback at the beginning. Lately it has been “Yes, Yes, Yes!”
The first thing I say to new tournament winners; “Don’t forget how you got here!”
How good do you have to get before you can stop practicing? Put it another way, “If you are not getting better, you are getting worse!” (Late Football Coach Joe Paterno)
