So I am reading my latest edition of Coach’s Journal and this quote caught my eye. Anyone ever coached by me or one of the instructor/athletes I work with have heard this in various forms.
“If you’re only focusing on the outcome, you can become fearful. If you focus on the process, you can be fearless.”
Joe Madden, Major League baseball coach.
In pressure situations, preparation takes over. If you have prepared properly you will not be focused on score, you will be focused on “how” to make the shot. That is why how is so important. What is what shot to hit, not how to hit it. To hit it correctly over and over, takes a concerted effort of how to execute the shot.
Monday night racquetball league and you have a setup. You hit a pass that comes off the back wall and your opponent skips it. You win? Not really; an opponent lost.
Monday night racquetball league and you have a setup. You hit kill shot down the line or wide angled cross-court. You win! Definitely!
Rehearse the perfect shot!
Be Fearless!
