Alternative training methods pop up from some of the “old school” legends from time to time on the blogs and internet. Here are some of my likes and dislikes:
Like the idea of having only three main strings and three crosses for sweet spot contact with the ball.
Dislike the idea of playing with weighted racquets due to technique and injury issues.
Like the idea of practice swinging on air with weighted (slightly) racquets and switching to regular racquets to play.
Dislike the idea of playing with ankle weights due to stress on knees.
Like the idea of playing in a limited capacity with weighted vests. (limited means just that-ie three shot rallies)
Dislike the idea of eye patches to increase visual acuity (but I must say I could be persuaded on this one as some athletes have an issue on one side or the other and are not even aware of it.)
Like the idea of putting a dot on the ball to focus on with both eyes for visual acuity. (Now you use both eyes, just like in a game as opposed to the patch idea aforementioned.)
Dislike the idea of squash if old school lunging squash technique is used.
Love the idea of squash if modern footwork is used.
One thing about the legends-when they post something it deserves attention. Nothing but respect for their game and achievements.
