Racquetball Practice Drills and Games

Solo practice can be boring. Here are a few games I used back in the day. Some of these were borrowed from others and some were invented out of necessity!!!

1. HBM–Human ball machine-simply find a practice partner with control and have them give you ten setups of your choice. You execute the setups and then return the favor. You and your practice partner become HBMs.

2. Rally scoring serve games work like this. You serve say a drive serve left. That is the only serve you can use and your opponent never serves. The game is to 7 although it can be to any score you want. Server works on the serve and winning the rallies and the returner works on returning and winning the rallies. After 7 points the players switch places.

3. 5 in a row game. You have to score five points in a row to win a game. Play two of three regular rules but the object is to score five in a row. Server begins to work on variations of serves and thinking ahead in sequence to win this game!

4. Rhythm games(solo practice) –there is a rhythm to racquetball and the best players have it. As Sir Isaac Newton said years ago for every action there is a reaction. Too many players just have an action and no reaction. In other words to hit the ball harder you have to turn away from the ball before you turn into it. I like the L to R and R to L drills. Give yourself a setup and move left to right (L to R) stay there and hit a setup back the other way. (R to L) As you move at half speed to hit your “lollypop setup” work on the counter-turn away before you turn into the ball.

5. Ceiling ball games accomplish the same “rhythm”. Simply have one player one the right and one on the left and serve by hitting ceiling balls to the other side. Short or bad ones can be shot by the other player. Keep score to make it fun!

Hope these fantastic five help your game. Of course these drills are not so great if you have poor mechanics and footwork–be sure to get those checked out by a qualified Pro!
