Scenario-Match is not going your way. You are getting whipped. Nothing is going right. Why wait until the game is out of hand to call a timeout? Try not to let the game or match get out of hand. I was watching a video and watching this athlete go down in flames. I knew when I saw the scores something was not right and as I watched the video I saw the problem. There was a coach for that match and the coach should have gotten the athlete to call a timeout, and fix the issue.

The issue–the player was shooting everything. I saw only two attempts at ceiling balls and I should have seen more. There is a subtle way of relating that to an athlete, but this coach didn’t see it. Worse, they don’t want to learn.

My advice to new coaches. Don’t be threatened. My first game as a head football coach, my team was smoked by a team coached by an old out of shape guy. I was just out of college and thought I was all that and a bag of chips. This old guy’s team was better coached. I watched. How did he do that? He would spend time on the sidelines with players, calmly going over what they did wrong.

What am I doing? I’m on my sidelines yelling.

I did a 180 and began imitating the smart old guy. What happened? My teams started winning. I brought the same thing to racquetball. In pressure situations, nobody needs to hear how badly they are playing. They need help. It is up to a coach to give that player the help. Sadly it is not happening a lot of times. The athletes deserve better!
