“Talent Plus Technique Beats Talent” -Tom Brady Former NFL Quarterback
When I get a new athlete at any level of play, I take their confidence in me seriously. I do all within my limited power to make sure they improve. But this is a two way street.I can put in all the time but he athlete must do the same! In the past the athletes I have coached and who have put in the work, have proven my coaching works. They worked hard and perfected the techniques I teach.
They worked me too. Communicated with me and employed the advice I gave.
They believed in me-in return of course I believed in them.
So if you think about it, coaching comes down to these two questions.
Does the player believe in me?
Do the Coach believe in them?
If the answer is yes to those questions great things can be accomplished!!
Now you new coaches out there. I see you and I see how hard you work. I see the training techniques you post and are proud of. Your work is noticed. But just repeating a skill over and over does not guarantee success. Read on and look for Technique!
I coach folks all over the world. That puts the onus on the athlete to hit the gym, and do the work. That takes discipline. I am only a coach. The player who puts the time in and practices makes me look like a genius. Of course one who is not putting in the practice time the reverse is just as noticeable!
Re: technique-every week almost I work with players of all levels. Some of these athletes have succeeded in spite of poor technique but injury will start to catch up to them! So why do I teach what I teach? I like to ask that question.
Me: So? Why do I teach so much technique?
Answer: So I can be a better player?
Me: Yes, but not the main reason.
Answer: So I can keep the ball out of center court?
Me: Yes, but not the main reason.
Answer: So I can hit the ball harder with less effort?
Me: Yes, but not the main reason!
Answer: I give up-what is the main reason?
Me: So you have a longer career and play more injury-free.
Hopefully all you young coaches can experience success! Onward and upward!
